A FIRST QUARTER Moon occurs on Wednesday, October 1, 2014, at 3:33 PM EDT.

Wednesday afternoon, a First Quarter Moon occurs when the Sun in Libra forms a square with the Capricorn Moon. There is a crisis theme surrounding any quarter Moon phase, as we feel compelled to take action. Shortly after, we are made aware of how our actions affect those close to us, perhaps through trial and error. Whatever project or initiative we began around the New Moon on September 24th is now off the ground, and it may face its first obstacles.

This phase of the Moon occurs at 8 degrees and 33 minutes of Capricorn square the Sun at 8 degrees and 33 minutes of Libra, affecting people born with personal planets and points at approximately 7 to 11 degrees of the Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn) most significantly.

(Times are Eastern)

The Sun is in Libra; Mercury is in Scorpio; Venus is in Virgo until the 29th, when it enters Libra; Mars is in Sagittarius.

The Sun is in Libra from September 22-October 23. Libra rules relationships with others as mirrors of ourselves. Meeting others halfway, compromise, and negotiation come under the rule of Libra. The focus is now on balance--finding balance and harmony through relationships with others and through art. Libra is the sign of the peacemaker. However, life is not always peaceful with Libra in its attempt to restore balance. Decision-making can be more challenging while the Sun is in Libra. Libra weighs both sides of any situation, and sometimes this process seems endless! In Libra, the Sun is concerned about not rocking the boat and not rubbing others the wrong way. Tactfulness, style, tolerance, and sociability are some of the keywords for Libra. On the shadow side, Libra can be self-serving, indecisive, passive-aggressive, and superficial.

Mercury is in Scorpio from September 27-October 10. When Mercury is in Scorpio, our thoughts and communications are more probing and intense. While Mercury in Libra urged us to find balance and to arrive at fair solutions, Mercury in Scorpio instinctively knows that life simply isn't fair. Mercury in Scorpio seeks truths in all that is hidden and undercover. We tend to probe, observe, and focus our thoughts under this influence. Looking for motivations--the more deeply buried the better--satisfies an intellectual need now. Our thoughts are profound. We throw away superficial manners of communicating in favor of deep conversations. Scorpio is extremely sharp, profound, and analytical. Thinking is inclined to be one-track minded, focused, and even obsessive.

Venus is in Virgo September 5-29. This is a time when we express our love through practical means and gestures--running errands, doing detail work, or just being there for our lovers. Love needs to make sense and have a purpose with Venus in Virgo. Virgo is an Earth sign, which is sensual but also quite practical. Besides our romantic natures, what we decide to buy and the types of entertainment we enjoy during this cycle is ruled by whether or not things make sense. We could easily feel guilty if we are too self-indulgent at this time. Rendering services to others can fill a need, and can be an expression of love. The shadow side of this position is being overly critical of our partners, picky, or worrisome.

Venus is in Libra September 29-October 23. We are more inclined to employ charm rather than aggressive behavior in order to get what we want during this cycle. Although Venus in Libra virtually lives for relationships, there is an air of cool detachment to this energy. We are very obliging with others--quite willing to negotiate and compromise. We can be especially idealistic about love. We prefer things be done the "right" way, and are turned off by aggressive or uncouth behavior. The shadow side of this position is dependency, inconsistency, and superficiality. In an attempt to avoid unpleasant situations, we could easily gloss over deeper issues at play in our relationships. It's probably best to avoid the trap of acquiescing to our partners but privately resenting the fact or thinking ourselves martyrs for doing so! This is also a time when we are more artistically inclined. We tend to seek balance in our personal environment.

Mars is in Sagittarius from September 13-October 26. With a Sagittarius Mars, our actions are motivated by our ideals. We are bothered by routine, quickly becoming restless if we feel confined. We have a love of adventure, and of conquest--this is the position of wanderlust. We start projects or challenges with gusto, although we may tend to abandon them rather quickly. This may be because we set our sights too high!

Saturn entered Scorpio on October 5, 2012 and will transit the sign until 2015. Read about Saturn's transit through Scorpio here.

Jupiter entered Leo on July 16th, where it will transit until August 11th, 2015. Read about Jupiter's transit through Leo here.

Uranus entered Aries on March 11th, 2011. The urge to start fresh, to break free from restrictive attitudes or circumstances, to totally redesign an area of our lives (or even our personalities), and to gain freedom through independence is strong with Uranus in Aries.

Romance & Relationships

Venus
is in Virgo from September 5-29. This is a time when we express our love through practical means and gestures--running errands, doing detail work, or just "being there" for our lovers. Essentially, we fuss over our partners, sometimes a little too much! Our availability and accessibility is a sign of love. Love needs to make sense and have a purpose with Venus in Virgo. Virgo is an Earth sign, which is sensual but also quite practical. We could easily feel guilty if we are too self-indulgent during this cycle. We can be a little shy and prone to worry. We pick up on many different cues, attempting to analyze every detail of our lovers' reactions and responses. We could worry ourselves sick agonizing over details! In the process, we can miss out on the bigger and perhaps more meaningful cues. As well, Virgo is a sign that can live very much in the mind in the middle of an experience, failing to enjoy the moment. Self-consciousness can get in the way of enjoyment. Rendering services to others can fill a need, and can be an expression of love. The shadow side of this position is being overly critical of our partners, picky, or worrisome.

Venus is in Libra from September 29-October 23. Venus rules Libra and thus is dignified in the sign. Venus feels right "at home" in Libra, where she seeks to balance and harmonize. With Venus in Libra, we can easily be in love with love. We are more comfortable with a close partner with whom we can seek to have a balanced relationship. We are more inclined to employ charm rather than aggressive behavior in order to get what we want.

This week: We may feel restless or go overboard in our relationships on Monday and Tuesday. It can be a pleasurable time if we don't take promises or statements made now too seriously. On Friday, there can be some second-guessing in relationships, particularly if our relationships have been ignoring our needs for a soulful, romantic, or spiritual connection.

Venus, the Goddess of Love: Highlights in the Coming Week:

Venus in Virgo September 5-29. If it makes sense you love it, and if it doesn't you feel guilty about it: that's what it's like now. A loving attention to details and a sense of satisfaction in doing what is right (especially with respect to your health) are some of the qualities that come to the fore at a time like this.
Venus in Libra September 29-October 23. As this new cycle takes hold in your life, romance and social interaction take on a greater importance for you. Harmonious ties to others are what you yearn for; refinement and elegance are what you seek. The ideal partnership, the perfect balance, the highest standards of truth and beauty - these are some of the things that quicken your pulse now.
Venus contraparallel Sun September 28.
Venus contraparallel Chiron September 29. Others, and especially partners and love interests, have something to teach us. This is a time for identifying vulnerable areas.
Venus semi-square Jupiter September 29-30. We experience a strong desire for more pleasure in our lives, which can be excessive. Take care not to overstate your feelings or to set up unrealistic expectations in your partnerships.
Venus quincunx Neptune October 3. Idealism and disappointments in love. Avoid becoming blinded by what you want to see, rather than what really is. Doubts about love.
Venus semi-square Saturn October 3-4. Feelings of isolation, of not getting what we really want, and of not being loved the way we want to be loved can get in the way of pleasant relations with our partners.
Venus parallel Chiron October 4-5. Healing energy is brought to love relationships, and a new cycle begins. A commitment-friendly transit. Love can heal old wounds. We are open to romantic feelings, and more willing to act upon them. This is a good time to make a resolution to repair, heal, and improve relationships.

The Moon & Timing

The Void of Course Moon is the period of time after the Moon has made its last aspect in one sign until the Moon enters a new sign. During Void of Course Moon periods, it is generally wise to stick to routine rather than to begin new projects. The last aspect the Moon makes before changing signs is indicated here, and is indicative of the "outcome" of the matter (whether that is a new project begun before the void period, or the answer to a question in Horary Astrology). Void of Course in Horary Astrology: If you were asking a question and making a chart for the answer, as you do in Horary astrology, it is said that since the Moon is not looking forward to any more aspects in this sign, you would have to say that the answer is not forthcoming; any questions asked at this time would not come to pass. The Moon being Void is one of the Strictures against Judgment in Horary Astrology.

The Void-of-Course Moon this Week:

Void-of-course Moon on Sunday, September 28th, from 4:32 PM EDT, with the Moon's last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Venus), until the Moon enters Sagittarius at 6:51 PM EDT.

VOC Moon on Monday, September 29th, from 11:30 PM EDT, with the Moon's last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Jupiter), until the Moon enters Capricorn on Wednesday, October 1st, at 12:42 AM EDT.

VOC Moon on Thursday, October 2nd, from 12:19 PM EDT, with the Moon's last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Saturn), until the Moon enters Aquarius the next day, Friday, October 3rd, at 4:01 AM EDT.

VOC Moon on Saturday, October 4th, from 2:33 PM EDT, with the Moon's last aspect before changing signs (a square to Saturn), until the Moon enters Pisces the next day, Sunday, October 5th, at 5:25 AM EDT.

This Week's Calendar

This Week's Aspects

Sun semi-square Saturn. It's hard to satisfy the ego today. We feel blocked by circumstances or others. It's too easy to feel discouraged, but discouragement is a time waster. Gratitude isn't forthcoming right now, so it's best to wait it out rather than waste energy letting it get to you.

Sun quincunx Neptune. It can be difficult to concentrate and to formulate clear goals just now. Misconceptions abound. Fear of being ineffective can undermine our confidence when it comes to making clear or definite decisions, and for doing new things.

Venussemi-squareJupiter Venus semi-square Jupiter. We might take great strides to get noticed. Avoid impulsive buying. Problems in our personal life likely won't get resolved under this influence. Avoid hasty (or haughty!) decisions. We might overstate our feelings or promise more than we can deliver, and the tendency to overdo is strong.

Venus quincunx Neptune. Under this influence, we are apt to see what we want to see, rather than what actually is, when it comes to both financial affairs and affairs of the heart. Still, we tend to doubt our perceptions of perfection. The end result is a feeling of insecurity on romantic and social levels. Avoid making large purchases and commitments at this time.

Pluto Sun square Pluto. Insubordination and abuse of power. Impatience with rules. Compulsiveness. The urge to get to the bottom of matters is with us, but we are too insistent. Avoid beating a dead horse and attempting to force matters that should naturally take time to unfold. Circumstances now can push us to discover our own power--power that comes from a strong sense of self rather than superficial energy derived from manipulating people into doing what we want them to do. Events may occur now that highlight the need to trust.

Venus semi-square Saturn. There may be difficulties relating to others under this influence. People may be cool with their affections and emotionally distant. Avoid new financial undertakings, as they may prove to be "money pits" as time passes. There may be anxiety or troubles with regards to matters concerned with the feelings. Romantic disappointments, unrequited love, separations, and broken engagements are the more negative manifestations. We tend to lack social confidence at this time and adopt a shy, formal, or reserved social manner. This transit is best used for reflection.

MarssquareChiron Mars square Chiron. It can be challenging expressing our desires and our anger clearly and directly under this influence. There can be a tendency to rebel against others' wishes or plans. We may be defensive and touchy, and resentments or frustrations can surface now.

This Week's Planetary Positions By Sign (General Trends):

Sun in Libra Meeting yourself in another person is the keynote of a new cycle which begins for you now. Relationships - romantic, business, social - are the arena where this drama is played out. In coming to know the other person, forging ties that bind two people, you come to a better understanding of yourself. It's easy in theory, but it's only in practice that it comes to mean anything real - so practice until you get it right!

Mercury in Scorpio A pronounced curiosity about taboos and mysteries plays a greater part in your life now. Your mind is on cutting through the nonessentials and penetrating to the core is where your mind is at now; you want to know who (or what) pulls the strings. Sex, taxes, investments, and others of life's most compelling phenomena may captivate your interest more than ever before.

Venus in Virgo If it makes sense you love it, and if it doesn't you feel guilty about it: that's what it's like now. A loving attention to details and a sense of satisfaction in doing what is right (especially with respect to your health) are some of the qualities that come to the fore at a time like this.

Venus in Libra As this new cycle takes hold in your life, romance and social interaction take on a greater importance for you. Harmonious ties to others are what you yearn for; refinement and elegance are what you seek. The ideal partnership, the perfect balance, the highest standards of truth and beauty - these are some of the things that quicken your pulse now.

Mars in Sagittarius Ideology is a keynote of the new phase you have begun - the power of ideas and the power they wield over people. Religious, cultural, or philosophical controversies and crusades have a way of stirring your blood. Travel and adventure are compelling temptations as you dare to test your mettle and stretch your horizons.

Jupiter in Leo High drama, big romance, a creative bonanza: this is the stuff dreams are made of now. The world is your stage, the spotlight is your goal, and the love and appreciation of others is the air you breathe. Children, lovers, admirers: these are the people who figure large in your life as this cycle progresses. A willingness to gamble on the future.

Saturn in Scorpio This new cycle signals a need to recognize that there are powers beyond your control, that things are not what they seem on the surface. Trying to stay in control and on top only sets you up for a fall. There is a need for the resources of others. Failure to recognize this and deal with it can stop you in your tracks.

Uranus in Aries
A clean break with the past in some respects is signaled by the cycle you have just begun. What YOU need, YOUR freedom and independence, shattering old molds: these are the things that energize you and take priority in your life. Uniqueness and originality set you apart.

Neptune in Pisces Things spiritual and psychic take the driver's seat of your imagination as you begin a new cycle. The fine arts and all manner of fantasies assume a larger-than-life importance. Surrendering to fate, karma, and other powers greater than merely mortal may be seen as the ultimate liberation. If all is maya (illusion), what is the reality that gives rise to the world of appearances?

Pluto in Capricorn As this new phase dawns for you, the pursuit of social/political power and status has a way of seeming necessary and inevitable - and let nothing stand in its way. It starts out small, but has bigger consequences than you'd think. Ambition, responsibility, a place for everyone and everyone in their place...
