A LAST QUARTER MOON occurs on Sunday, January 31, 2016, at 10:28 PM EST.

On Sunday night, a Last Quarter Moon is exact, when the Sun in Aquarius forms a square with the Moon in Scorpio. The Last Quarter Moon phase points to some sort of crisis of consciousness. After basking in the awareness symbolized by the full light of the Moon at the time of last week's Full Moon, we disperse our knowledge and come to a point when we need to sort out what works for us--and what doesn't--in preparation for next week's New Moon, when something new is born once again. This is not the best time to start a major project, as the decreasing light of the Moon symbolizes a descent into unconsciousness. It's time to begin finishing up the details of that which was conceived at the last New Moon. What revelations did you have last week? What did they mean for you? What can be done now?

This phase of the Moon occurred at 11 degrees and 41 minutes of Scorpio square the Sun at 11 degrees and 41 minutes of Aquarius, affecting people born with personal planets and points at approximately 10 to 14 degrees of the Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius) most significantly.

Moon phase cycle: Bigger picture:

Jan 31, 2016    10:28 PM  Sun Square Moon (Last Quarter Moon)
Feb  8, 2016     9:39 AM  Sun Conjunct Moon (New Moon)

(Times are Eastern)

The Sun is in Aquarius; Mercury is in Capricorn; Venus is in Capricorn; Mars is in Scorpio.

The Sun is in Aquarius from January 20-February 19. During this cycle, we are motivated by our hunger for knowledge, experience, and originality. Innovation is more important to us than convention. We become more aware of what is outdated in our lives, and strive to find new perspectives and new ways to do things. The class distinctions, structure, and order that Capricorn finds appealing now seem to be too rigid. The freedom of the individual becomes far more significant to us. We strive to free ourselves from some of the restrictions, inhibitions, and limitations that now feel constraining rather than safe.

Mercury is in Capricorn from January 8-February 13. When Mercury is in Capricorn, our thinking is methodical and our focus is sober and practical. It is easier to concentrate on the task at hand under this influence. Our conversations may be quite realistic or focused on business/practical matters. Our thought patterns and communication styles become more logical, orderly, and organized. We are more able to sort out what is relevant and essential. Realism enters the picture, our speech is no-nonsense, and precision becomes important to us. We need to be wary of becoming too rigid in our thinking. We may come across as cold or harsh. For some, there is fine line between realism and pessimism.

Venus is in Capricorn from January 23-February 16. Getting serious about our finances and boosting our relations with business partners and/or co-workers will be easier than usual under this influence. Our talents for creating artistic structure and form are enhanced, and our ability to form connections with people who support our ambitions is increased. We value enduring connections, reliability, and faithfulness. We take expressing our feelings seriously, and we take our time to warm up to others. We generally keep our "cool" in relationships.

Mars in Scorpio from January 3-March 5. In Scorpio, Mars is driven and focused on getting what it wants. We are persevering, single-minded, and strong. The desire to experience our emotional depths, as well as the urge to penetrate the surface of life in order to explore deeper levels of existence, is powerful. We are fascinated with what others tend to repress, and are drawn to experiencing and understanding these things. We are less inclined to avoid important issues now. In some ways, we are attracted to crisis, as we see crisis as transformative and emotionally exciting. We would rather feel extreme emotions than nothing at all, as mediocrity or the "middle road" is felt to be unsatisfying.

Saturn transits Sagittarius from December 23, 2014, to June 14, 2015, and then from September 17, 2015 to December 20, 2017. Read about Saturn's transit through Sagittarius here.

Jupiter entered Virgo on August 11th, and will transit Virgo until September 9, 2016. Read about Jupiter in Virgo here.

Uranus entered Aries on March 11th, 2011. The urge to start fresh, to break free from restrictive attitudes or circumstances, to totally redesign an area of our lives (or even our personalities), and to gain freedom through independence is strong with Uranus in Aries.

Romance & Relationships

Venus
is in Capricorn from January 23-February 16. Venus in Capricorn is a cycle in which security and stability in our relationships is paramount. We are more cautious with our emotions, and somewhat skeptical of both our own feelings and others' expressions of affection. Longevity is important to us under this influence. There is a formality to Capricorn that can make personal expressions seem awkward and forced. However, this cycle offers us the opportunity to consider some of the practical issues of our relations and to work on making our partnerships work in the real world. A dose of realism in our personal lives can help us to feel more grounded and secure in the long run.

This week: February is an easier month than most, and Venus is receiving many supportive aspects. This week, however, holds some of the more challenging or demanding Venus aspects of the month. Venus aligns with Pluto and then forms a square with Uranus on the 5th and 6th, respectively, and complicated or unresolved buried feelings can surface powerfully. While this can be disruptive, it can also be very revealing. Attractions can be intense. We can be difficult to please as desires and whims emerge powerfully. We might demand more from our relationships now, but there can be a simultaneous obsession with getting close to someone and a need for personal space. If and when we get what we want, we may not feel satisfied.

Venus, the Goddess of Love: Highlights in the Coming Week:

Venus in Capricorn January 23-February 16. Marry for money and then learn to love 'em: that's what your heart tells you now, as a new cycle gets underway in your life. Does that sound cynical? Maybe so - but it does reflect the yearning you feel for security and stability now, and it suggests the kind of compromises you may be willing to make to accomplish these objectives.
Venus sextile Neptune January 29-30. Unusual attractions that add imagination, inspiration, and emotional "color" to our lives may occur now. We are attuned to the subtleties of human interaction, and we are more inclined to naturally cooperate with others. An imaginative, romantic time.
Venus conjunct Pluto February 5. An extraordinarily passionate time for relationships. We are focused and confident. There is a tendency to want--and to demand--a lot from a partnership or friendship. Powerful and uplifting time for romantic/sexual relationships. New insights into relationships and love. Strong attractions. Relationships begun under this influence are intense and passionate, deep and far from superficial, and can be quite possessive as well.
Venus square Uranus February 6. We might have to deal with issues of freedom versus intimacy during this period. Peculiar or impulsive attractions are exciting, but unlikely to last very long. Treat them as passing fancies, and enjoy them while they last--but try to hold off on making any big decisions with regards to love today.
Venus sextile Mars February 6-7. This points to success and ease in close personal interactions. We are passionate and sexy. It is a good time for financial ventures, social life, artistic pursuits, romance, and pleasure. We are now able to take the initiative and to achieve harmony and sexual fulfillment. This influence brings satisfaction to the feelings. We may make permanent ties or relationships that prove to be fruitful and fortunate.
Venus sextile Chiron February 7-8. Love has the power to heal old wounds. We are open to romantic feelings and more willing to act upon them.

The Moon & Timing

The Void of Course Moon is the period of time after the Moon has made its last aspect in one sign until the Moon enters a new sign. During Void of Course Moon periods, it is generally wise to stick to routine rather than to begin new projects. The last aspect the Moon makes before changing signs is indicated here, and is indicative of the "outcome" of the matter (whether that is a new project begun before the void period, or the answer to a question in Horary Astrology). Void of Course in Horary Astrology: If you were asking a question and making a chart for the answer, as you do in Horary astrology, it is said that since the Moon is not looking forward to any more aspects in this sign, you would have to say that the answer is not forthcoming; any questions asked at this time would not come to pass. The Moon being Void is one of the Strictures against Judgment in Horary Astrology.

The Void-of-Course Moon this Week:

Void-of-course Moon on Monday, February 1st, from 7:36 PM EST, with the Moon's last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Jupiter), until the Moon enters Sagittarius the next day, Tuesday, February 2nd, at 10:50 AM EST.

VOC Moon on Thursday, February 4th, from 5:04 AM EST, with the Moon's last aspect before changing signs (a square to Jupiter), until the Moon enters Capricorn at 7:45 PM EST.

VOC Moon on Saturday, February 6th, from 10:54 AM EST, with the Moon's last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Jupiter), until the Moon enters Aquarius the next day, Sunday, February 7th, at 1:00 AM EST.

Void of Course Moon for February 2016:

Timing with the Moon - Better Periods this Week for Electing New Initiatives

The Moon is waning this week - a period that is generally considered unfavorable for new beginnings, with exceptions.  (See Best Time to Start a Business for more details).

According to principles of timing with the Moon, a window of opportunity occurs from Sunday, January 31st, at approximately 11:30 PM EST, until Monday, February 1st, at approximately 7:35 PM EST, while the Moon is in Scorpio. [Safer for big projects may be on February 1st from 7:30 AM to 7:35 PM EST] Another window occurs on Saturday, February 6th, from approximately 3:30 AM to 10:50 AM EST, while the Moon is in Capricorn.

This Week's Calendar

This Week's Aspects

MercurysquareUranus Mercury square Uranus. Our senses are stimulated, and we could have sudden flashes of insight or fresh new ideas. However, our ideas are not always received well by others and we can be scatter-brained. It's a challenge to deal with routine matters or monotonous tasks under this influence. Tasks may be left undone or interrupted. This is not a good time to be understood, so we may want to hold off presenting our ideas for the time being. New information can surface now that upsets the status quo, but can also act to stimulate our minds into new ways of thinking.

sextile Mars sextile Pluto. We are able to successfully focus on our goals, to take decisive action, and to go after what we want without stepping on others' toes under this influence.

sextile Mercury sextile Chiron. This is an excellent period for opening up communications with others, as we are more sensitive than usual and more willing to listen. Getting our point across is easier, as it's not only about which words we choose to communicate, we intuitively express the meaning and intention behind the words. We can effectively use words to heal and comfort just now. We are also more open to new ways of looking at problems or at life in general.

SunsextileSaturn Sun sextile Saturn. We feel grounded and stable. It's easy to stick to a specific task and make headway. Productivity may be slow, but it's steady. We are taking into account practical considerations and we are especially aware of the element of time. We are more able to discipline ourselves and put our egos aside in order to get the job done.

quincunx  Mars quincunx Uranus. Making adjustments to our goals may be necessary now, and this can temporarily drain our energy or make us feel restless and impatient.

VenusPluto Venus conjunct Pluto. This is an "all or nothing" energy. We have the power of attraction at our disposal. Things shouldn't be forced, even though the desire to sway, coerce, and manipulate others may be present. Passions are strong and intense. There is a tendency to want--and to demand--a lot from a partnership or friendship. This is a time when we can be focused and confident, especially when it comes to handling business and finances, as well as with regards to love and partnership.

SunsextileUranus Sun sextile Uranus. We are willing to adapt to new circumstances, ideas, and unfamiliar situations. It's a good time to join organizations and groups and to attend meetings or social events, as these can be enlightening. We can find creative solutions to problems now and effect positive changes. Flexibility is the key to success under this influence.

MercuryJupiter Mercury trine Jupiter. Looking for meaning in mundane affairs, positive thinking, insights, cooperation--these are themes of this influence. Our ideas are big and our intentions noble. We might receive good news or offers now. We prefer to think about the big picture rather than becoming bogged down with details. This transit favors short trips, writing, teaching, studying, submitting applications and forms, accurate diagnoses and observations (all things equal).

VenussquareUranus Venus square Uranus. Values and tastes may clash, and group activities may suffer as a result. Impulsive attractions to both people and material goods can lead us astray. Avoid impulse buys at this time. Some instability, restlessness, and rebelliousness is probable in romantic relationships. We may not see eye to eye, and we might be taken off guard by unexpected events. This is not a favorable aspect for beauty treatments because they could have unexpected results. We may struggle with freedom versus intimacy issues at this time. Hold off on decision-making with regards to finances.

What's In Store By the Stars - Daily Astrology Trends

(as featured on our site's main page and in our Daily Trends Calendar)

JANUARY 31
The Moon is in Scorpio all day, harmonizing with Neptune this afternoon and allowing easier access to our intuition. Tonight, a Last Quarter Moon is exact, when the Sun in Aquarius forms a square with the Moon in Scorpio. There can be some tension experienced as we can feel a call for action, and with Mercury forming a square to Uranus influencing us as well, there can be much in the way of mental pressure. Our senses are stimulated, and we could have sudden flashes of insight or fresh new ideas. However, it can be difficult organizing our thoughts or dealing with routine matters under this influence. Tasks may be left undone or interrupted. This is not a good time to be understood, so we may want to hold off presenting our ideas for the time being. New information can surface now that upsets the status quo, but can also act to stimulate our minds into new ways of thinking.

FEBRUARY 1
The Moon is in Scorpio all day, encouraging us to reach into our depths and get a little closer to understanding and exploring our needs and desires. The Moon aligns with Mars this morning, awakening emotional desire and stimulating some level of urgency. Later, it harmonizes with Pluto, Mercury, Chiron, and Jupiter, offering us plenty of opportunities and channels for expressing your feelings and filling our needs. It's a good day for clarifications without defensiveness, particularly if we've rocked the boat recently.

A void of course Moon occurs from 7:36 PM EST, with the Moon's last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Jupiter), until the Moon enters Sagittarius tomorrow, Tuesday, February 2nd, at 10:50 AM EST.

FEBRUARY 2
The Moon continues its transit of Scorpio until 10:50 AM EST, when it enters Sagittarius. As it does, there can be an emotional shift that feels as if we're moving out from the darkness. Time spent on probing into the depths of our own emotions or of situations has served its purpose, and now we're ready to look ahead to new horizons and explore the world around us. Even so, a Mars-Pluto sextile approaches, exact early tomorrow, that encourages us to apply some of the new insight we've gained in order to improve our lives or further our ambitions. We are able to successfully focus on our goals, to take decisive action, and to go after what we want without stepping on others' toes under this influence.

The Moon ends its void period at 10:50 AM EST, when the Moon enters Sagittarius.

FEBRUARY 3
The Moon is in Sagittarius all day, aligning with Saturn and reminding us of our responsibilities. We have some strong energy for problem solving and dealing with priorities with Mars sextile Pluto, the Sun sextile Saturn, and Mercury sextile Chiron. This is a time for honing in on areas of our life that need practical attention, recognizing priorities, identifying areas of waste, and focusing on goals. It's easy to stick to a specific task and make headway. Productivity may be slow, but it's steady. We are more able to discipline ourselves and put our egos aside in order to get the job done today.

FEBRUARY 4
The Moon continues to transit Sagittarius until 7:45 PM EST. While there has been focused, rather serious energy with us since the Moon entered your sign on Tuesday, and today, there is more room for Sagittarian's sense of adventure. We are a little more spontaneous and hungry for new experiences and knowledge. Bored with the mundane, anything that breaks the routine is appealing now. We take a philosophical attitude to problems or challenges in our lives. The Moon moves to practical, goal-oriented Capricorn at 7:45 PM EST.

A void of course Moon occurs from 5:04 AM EST, with the Moon's last aspect before changing signs (a square to Jupiter), until the Moon enters Capricorn at 7:45 PM EST.

FEBRUARY 5
The Moon is in Capricorn all day inclines us to seek out steadiness, but a quincunx between Mars and Uranus as well as a Venus-Pluto conjunction tend to demand adjustments or change. Making adjustments to our goals may be necessary now, and this can temporarily drain our energy or make us feel restless and impatient. Venus-Pluto stimulates intense feelings. We have the power of attraction at our disposal. Things shouldn't be forced, even though the desire to sway, coerce, and manipulate others may be present. Passions are strong and intense. There is a tendency to want, and to demand, a lot from a partnership or friendship. This is a time when we can be especially focused, and perhaps obsessed, especially when it comes to handling business and finances, as well as with regards to love and partnership.

FEBRUARY 6
The Moon continues to transit Capricorn all day. A sextile between the Sun and Uranus stimulates willingness to adapt to new circumstances, ideas, and unfamiliar situations. Group connections can be enlightening. We might arrive at creative solutions to problems and make positive changes. This is a time for flexibility. A Mercury-Jupiter trine also occurs today, and we are seeking out a little more meaning. There can be new insights and positive thinking now. Late afternoon, a square between Venus and Uranus can point to some unrest in our relationships as we focus on the differences in our values, styles, and tastes. Impulsive attractions to both people and material goods can lead us astray. Avoid impulse buys and hold off on major decision-making with regards to finances. We might be taken off guard by unexpected events, and we may struggle with freedom versus intimacy issues at this time. We are also building towards a Sun-Mars square, and we can be quite temperamental in the latter part of the day.

A void of course Moon occurs from 10:54 AM EST, with the Moon's last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Jupiter), until the Moon enters Aquarius the next day, Sunday, February 7th, at 1:00 AM EST.

Moon Signs This Week:

When the Moon is in Scorpio

MoonScorpioIntensity is what the Moon in Scorpio is all about. Whether it's passion, elation, sorrow, or desire, emotions are felt on a deeply personal level. We are motivated by the desire to get to the bottom of things, and we instinctively read between the lines. Superficiality won't work for us now. The Moon in Scorpio urges us to uncover our own power, and it's an excellent time to rid ourselves of old fears and limiting habits. It can be an intimate and passionate time. Avoid manipulative tactics, brooding, and suspiciousness.

The Moon in Scorpio generally favors the following activities: Taxes, accounting, intimacy issues, psychological examinations, research, self-examination, getting rid of old things.

When the Moon is in Sagittarius

MoonSagittariusThe Moon is at her most optimistic and upbeat in Sagittarius. We are motivated by a need to seek the truth, and we are ready to pursue a new vision. We are not interested in details just now. Instead, we focus on the big picture. New experiences and adventures satisfy a deep emotional need. Spontaneity is the key. We may also be inclined toward overdoing and overstating. We don't want to plan ahead, and prefer to "wing it".

The Moon in Sagittarius generally favors the following activities: Adventurous activities that involve "winging it", travel, higher education, starting publishing projects, advertising, sports, physical activity.

When the Moon is in Capricorn

However, it can also be a productive time when we look reality in the eye.

This Week's Planetary Positions By Sign (General Trends):

Sun in Aquarius This is a time when your path of self-development and expression becomes more and more unusual - setting you apart from the crowd and from all that is traditional. The new, the futuristic, the high-tech are the hallmarks of your lifestyle as the cycle gets underway. Ideas and technologies that change the way people live - not just one person, but many - are a major new focus in your life. Involvement with ideals and idealistic groups enhances your sense of purpose and mission.

Mercury in Capricorn Figuring out how to organize projects and people is apt to become a topic of special interest - and a challenge - at a time like this. Opinions are not enough for you now: they must be backed by authority or evidence, and above all they must have practical worth and application. A period of intense study and thought.

Venus in Capricorn Marry for money and then learn to love 'em: that's what your heart tells you now, as a new cycle gets underway in your life. Does that sound cynical? Maybe so - but it does reflect the yearning you feel for security and stability now, and it suggests the kind of compromises you may be willing to make to accomplish these objectives.

Mars in Scorpio Tear it down and build it up again, reach in and pluck out the offending element: that's what the new cycle you have entered is like. Power becomes a compelling idea, perhaps even an aphrodisiac - and you've got a stronger than usual supply of it now. Use it, don't abuse it - or you might find that it's a two-edged sword!

Jupiter in Virgo "To serve and protect" is the motto that best fits the cycle that now dawns in your life. Taking better care of such material concerns as work and health becomes an article of faith. You see the big picture where these things are concerned and realize that it can only come together when all the details are in place. Sometimes, in trying to get these details all lined up, you might lose sight of your objective. Remember: Look beyond the trees to see the forest.

Saturn in Sagittarius The new phase now beginning in your life brings a need to break out of narrow concepts and legalistic philosophical or religious ideas. Remember: "A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of small minds." Opportunities to broaden your mental horizons may not come with ease, but they are essential if you are to avoid a kind of spiritual stagnation.

Uranus in Aries
A clean break with the past in some respects is signaled by the cycle you have just begun. What YOU need, YOUR freedom and independence, shattering old molds: these are the things that energize you and take priority in your life. Uniqueness and originality set you apart.

Neptune in Pisces Things spiritual and psychic take the driver's seat of your imagination as you begin a new cycle. The fine arts and all manner of fantasies assume a larger-than-life importance. Surrendering to fate, karma, and other powers greater than merely mortal may be seen as the ultimate liberation. If all is maya (illusion), what is the reality that gives rise to the world of appearances?

Pluto in Capricorn As this new phase dawns for you, the pursuit of social/political power and status has a way of seeming necessary and inevitable - and let nothing stand in its way. It starts out small, but has bigger consequences than you'd think. Ambition, responsibility, a place for everyone and everyone in their place...
