A FIRST QUARTER MOON occurs on Saturday, April 25, 2015, at 7:55 PM EDT.

On Saturday afternoon, a First Quarter Moon occurs when the Sun in Taurus forms a square with the Leo Moon. There is a crisis theme surrounding any quarter Moon phase, as we feel compelled to take action. Shortly after, we are made aware of how our actions affect those close to us, perhaps through trial and error. Whatever project or initiative we began around the New Moon is now off the ground, and it may face its first obstacles.

This phase of the Moon occurs at 5 degrees and 27 minutes of Leo square the Sun at 5 degrees and 25 minutes of Taurus, affecting people born with personal planets and points at approximately 3 to 6 degrees of the Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius) most significantly.

May 18, 2015    12:13 AM  Sun Conjunct Moon (New Moon)

(Times are Eastern)

The Sun is in Aries until the 20th, when it enters Taurus; Mercury is in Taurus; Venus is in Gemini; Mars is in Taurus.

The Sun is in Aries from March 20-April 20. In Aries, the Sun is enthusiastic and spontaneous. We are motivated by the desire to conquer. We are more impulsive, and have the urge to initiate. Aries is a sign that bounces back quickly--there is little shame with Aries. It is brave and pioneering, and somewhat innocent. We are direct and rather uncomplicated in our needs, but we can also be short-sighted and lack the desire to plan ahead.

The Sun is in Taurus from April 20-May 21. In Taurus, the Sun is methodical, sensual, and receptive. The Sun in Taurus is most active when it is defending or resisting things! As the Sun moves through Taurus when plants take root, our determination and security needs are strong. Taurus is loyal to all that is familiar, and values longevity. The shadow side of Taurus is possessiveness and bullheadedness.

Mercury is in Taurus from April 14-30. When Mercury is in Taurus, our thinking is down to earth, solid, and grounded. Common sense reigns over more fanciful thinking. We communicate more deliberately under this influence, and our minds are oriented to the world of the five senses. We prefer the tried and true rather than new ways of thinking. Attention to one thing at a time can simplify our lives, but we may be in danger of narrow, overly conservative, or rigid thinking.

Venus is in Gemini April 11-May 7. In Gemini, we have a finger in every pie. Curiosity motivates us on romantic and social levels. "Variety is the spice of life" is the attitude now. We are sociable, communicative, and interested. We can be animated and fun but may also keep our distance on an emotional level. Attractions now may begin with words, as we tend to bond more readily on a mental level with Venus in Gemini. The shadow side of Gemini is fickleness.

Mars is in Taurus March 31-May 11. With Mars in Taurus, we are determined, stubborn, and resolute. Mars in Taurus can be passive, and is at its strongest when resisting or defending something! In stark contrast to the impulsive Mars in Aries cycle, we tend to pursue our goals by plodding along patiently. Our goals are longevity and long-term satisfaction.

Saturn transits Sagittarius from December 23, 2014, to June 14, 2015, and then from September 17, 2015 to December 20, 2017. Read about Saturn's transit through Sagittarius here.

Jupiter entered Leo on July 16th, where it will transit until August 11th, 2015. Read about Jupiter's transit through Leo here. Jupiter will transit Virgo from August 11, 2015 to September 9, 2016.

Uranus entered Aries on March 11th, 2011. The urge to start fresh, to break free from restrictive attitudes or circumstances, to totally redesign an area of our lives (or even our personalities), and to gain freedom through independence is strong with Uranus in Aries.

Romance & Relationships

Venus is in Gemini from April 11-May 7. In Gemini, Venus is communicative, sociable but emotionally aloof, insatiably curious, and a little bit flighty. Inconsistency with our affections is a strong possibility, but the desire for a meeting of minds is strong and the urge to socialize dominates. Some detachment from our emotions is likely, which may be a breath of fresh air for some. The lines of communication open, although we may only scratch the surface of things. Under this influence, love is playful and lighthearted. Fickleness is the shadow side of Venus in Gemini.

This week: Wednesday is a strong day for generating good will in our relationships with a spirit of generosity and openness. Friday is tricky - perhaps nobody is addressing it directly, but there can be underlying tension surrounding who has the upper hand in a relationship. The need to make adjustments becomes clearer.

Venus, the Goddess of Love: Highlights in the Coming Week:

Venus in Gemini April 11-May 7. Saying (or writing) it with style comes natural now. A yen for variety is a hallmark of this phase, and this especially applies to romantic experience and artistic tastes. (The latter tends to focus on literature in general and poetry in particular.) A sociable, congenial, slightly frivolous orientation sets in.
Venus square Neptune April 18-19. Relationship ups and downs characterize this transit--a time when romantic mirages are more than likely. We see what we hope to see, rather than what really is. The "highs" of a relationship begun under this energy may be thrilling, but the accompanying "lows" are bound to set in, and they can be extremely draining. Be careful not to set yourself up for disappointment.
Venus sextile Jupiter April 22. This aspect generates a happy, friendly, and optimistic attitude. People are a little more outgoing and sociable. Favors travel, education, and culture. Romantic opportunities. Harmony and good will.
Venus quincunx Pluto April 24. This is a time of adjustments and re-assessments in our close personal relationships and/or with regards to our social lives. Issues of power and control can arise. Unreasonable or irrational fears of loss, or jealousy, could also emerge.

The Moon & Timing

The Void of Course Moon is the period of time after the Moon has made its last aspect in one sign until the Moon enters a new sign. During Void of Course Moon periods, it is generally wise to stick to routine rather than to begin new projects. The last aspect the Moon makes before changing signs is indicated here, and is indicative of the "outcome" of the matter (whether that is a new project begun before the void period, or the answer to a question in Horary Astrology). Void of Course in Horary Astrology: If you were asking a question and making a chart for the answer, as you do in Horary astrology, it is said that since the Moon is not looking forward to any more aspects in this sign, you would have to say that the answer is not forthcoming; any questions asked at this time would not come to pass. The Moon being Void is one of the Strictures against Judgment in Horary Astrology.

The Void-of-Course Moon this Week:

Void-of-course Moon on Sunday, April 19th, from 7:08 PM EDT, with the Moon's last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Pluto), until the Moon enters Gemini the next day, Monday, April 20th, at 7:29 PM EDT.

VOC Moon on Wednesday, April 22nd, from 1:39 AM EDT, with the Moon's last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Uranus), until the Moon enters Cancer the next day, Thursday, April 23rd, at 12:27 AM EDT.

VOC Moon on Friday, April 24th, from 1:05 PM EDT, with the Moon's last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Mercury), until the Moon enters Leo the next day, Saturday, April 25th, at 9:14 AM EDT.

Timing with the Moon - Better Periods this Week for Electing New Initiatives

The Moon is waxing this week - a period that is generally considered favorable for new beginnings, with exceptions. (See Best Time to Start a Business for more details).

According to principles of timing with the Moon, a window of opportunity occurs from Tuesday, April 21st, at approximately 12:10 PM to Wednesday, April 22nd, at approximately 1:35 AM EDT, while the Moon is in Gemini. A better window is before the Mars-Pluto trine perfects, from 12:10 PM to 5:30 PM EDT on April 21st. Another window occurs on Friday, April 24th, from approx. 10 AM to 1 PM EDT, while the Moon is in Cancer.

This Week's Calendar

This Week's Aspects

MercurysextileNeptune Mercury sextile Neptune. Intuition runs high; we are more sensitive artistically; imagination is stirred; and we have an increased appreciation for subtleties. We are inspired and we are able to inspire others with our words.

VenusSquareNeptune Venus square Neptune. Relationship ups and downs characterize this transit - a time when romantic mirages are more than likely. We see what we hope to see, rather than what really is. The "highs" of a relationship begun under this energy may be thrilling, but the accompanying "lows" are bound to set in, and they can be extremely draining. Be careful not to set yourself up for disappointment. The same goes for finances - what appears to be a great buy is likely to turn out to be a financial drain or money pit. Lines can blur when it comes to pursuit of pleasure, as we can convince ourselves to believe what we want to believe.

MercurysquareJupiter Mercury square Jupiter. Information overload is possible today. It is all too easy to miss or neglect important details. We may exaggerate, have a hard time putting our ideas to practical use, or overstate under this influence. This is an unfavorable transit for travel. Our ideas and plans may be too grandiose just now. We could have a hard time convincing others of our point of view, and we could too easily jump to conclusions. There could be a lot of talk about nothing. Lack of clear mental focus, but we may make measurable progress if we can concentrate.

Mars trine Pluto. This is a powerful aspect that helps us to focus on our goals, to take decisive action, and to go after what we want without stepping on others' toes. We are willing to explore alternatives rather than simply relying on the tried and true. We are not afraid of a challenge and are willing to attempt to overcome obstacles. This is strong energy for reworking or overhauling a project.

MercurytrinePluto Mercury trine Pluto. Our mental faculties are attuned to otherworldly impressions, offering us increased insight, psychological understanding and awareness, and focused attention.

Venus sextile Jupiter. Cooperation, consideration for others, cheerfulness, positive attitude towards relationships, romantic opportunities, harmony. Favors financial endeavors. Optimistic spiritual energy is brought to relationships. We tend to connect to a higher purpose regarding our personal relationships and our values, attaching meaning to them. We may enjoy a feeling of well-being now. Ease is experienced in social situations. We are freer with our affections (and our money). This is also a favorable transit for entertaining and socializing.

MercuryconjunctMars Mercury conjunct Mars. This is a good energy for debate or energetic mental work. We may be called upon to make a decision, but it may be a hasty, ill-considered one. We may be argumentative and irritable under this influence, and particularly impatient with vagueness. Be careful to avoid cutting words and aggressive driving. Our minds may be especially clear and active, and this can be a good time to eliminate wasteful activities. This influence excites and over-stimulates the whole nervous system.

SunQuincunxSaturn Sun quincunx Saturn. Doubts, the feeling of not being good enough, and lack of self-confidence might plague us under this influence. Lack of faith in ourselves and in life hinders our movements and initiatives.

sextile Mercury sextile Chiron. This is an excellent period for opening up communications with others, as we are more sensitive than usual and more willing to listen. Getting our point across is easier, as it's not only about which words we choose to communicate, we intuitively express the meaning and intention behind the words. We can effectively use words to heal and comfort just now. We are also more open to new ways of looking at problems or at life in general.

VenusquincunxPluto Venus quincunx Pluto. This is a time of adjustments and re-assessments in our close personal relationships and/or with regards to our social lives. Issues of power and control can arise. Unreasonable or irrational fears of loss, or jealousy, could also emerge.

SunSemi-squareChiron Sun semi-square Chiron. The desire to learn and grow through experiences and through others is strong, but may be hampered by a lack of confidence or a fear of being different.

What's In Store By the Stars - Daily Astrology Trends

(as featured on our site's main page and in our Daily Trends Calendar)

APRIL 19
The Moon is in steady Taurus all day, bringing us back down to earth to some degree, although Neptune connecting with Mercury and Venus this morning can stimulate fantasies and dreaminess. Lines can blur when it comes to pursuit of pleasure, as we can convince ourselves to believe what we want to believe. This afternoon, we're more interested in what's real and what's important as the practical Taurus Moon aligns with action-oriented Mars and forms a trine with Pluto in Capricorn. Mars and Pluto are approaching a trine, exact on Tuesday, and we'll be increasingly interested in what we are capable of doing. We're getting our priorities straight. Today's Mercury-Mars parallel stimulates a strong desire to put our ideas into motion, and the trine between Venus and the North Node of the Moon can help get us in touch with the right people to move things along.

A void of course Moon occurs from 7:08 PM EDT, with the Moon's last aspect before changing signs (a trine to Pluto), until the Moon enters Gemini tomorrow, Monday, April 20th, at 7:29 PM EDT.

APRIL 20
The Moon is in steady Taurus until 7:29 PM EDT, when it enters Gemini. The Sun enters Taurus today as well for an approximately month-long stay, until April 21st. Mercury and Jupiter are moving towards a square aspect, exact early into the day tomorrow, and stimulating a desire for more meaning from our lives. Oftentimes this leads to exaggeration or misjudgment. However, big ideas coming to mind now may very well hold weight at a later date after refinement.

The Moon ends its void period when it enters Gemini at 7:29 PM EDT.

APRIL 21
The Moon is in Gemini all day, stimulating our curiosity. Today, Mars forms a trine with Pluto. This is a powerful aspect that helps us to focus on our goals, to take decisive action, and to go after what we want with a greater sense of our priorities. We are willing to explore alternatives rather than simply relying on the tried and true. We are not afraid of a challenge and are willing to attempt to overcome obstacles. This is strong energy for reworking or overhauling a project. We are especially effective, and possibly a little ruthless, when it comes to getting rid of what we don't need. Our ability to take the lead is enhanced, and we can be very determined and focused.

APRIL 22
The Moon continues its transit of communicative, curious Gemini all day. While Mars formed a trine with Pluto yesterday, today Mercury joins with Mars and forms a trine with Pluto. As well, Venus and Jupiter form a pleasing sextile - a soft, pleasant influence that promotes cooperation, acceptance, inclusiveness, and optimism, particularly in our relationships. We tend to connect to a higher purpose regarding our personal relationships and our values, attaching meaning to them. We are a little freer with our affections (and our money). This is one of the favorite transits for entertaining and socializing, and Mercury's parallel to Jupiter augments this further. The Mercury-Mars-Pluto influence, however, is also helpful but in a sharper, more calculating way. It promotes developing strategies for getting what we want, and it's very persuasive and focused. We are seeing our priorities more clearly, and our ambition is stimulated. We tend to want to do things our way, and we are especially good at solving problems and cutting to the chase.

A void of course Moon occurs from 1:39 AM EDT, with the Moon's last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Uranus), until the Moon enters Cancer the next day, Thursday, April 23rd, at 12:27 AM EDT.

APRIL 23
The Moon enters Cancer soon into the day, at 12:27 AM EDT. We are motivated by a need to belong and to feel safe under the influence of a Cancer Moon. We tend to respond to challenges or stress by retreating or withdrawing, and we are especially concerned with family and close loved ones. The Sun in Taurus is quincunx Saturn in Sagittarius today, which can point to temporary doubts. Lack of faith in what we are doing can temporarily hinder our movements and initiatives. We might now see the need to adjust our plans based on new responsibilities or a reality check.

The Moon is void until it enters Cancer at 12:27 AM EDT.

APRIL 24
The Moon is in Cancer all day, stimulating our desire for familiarity and safety. Mercury forms a sextile with Chiron, which can help open up communications. However, Venus quincunx Pluto points to the need to make adjustments or reassessments in our close relationships, with our finances, or when it comes to our pursuit of pleasure and entertainment. Issues of power and control can arise. Fears of loss or betrayal could be at the heart of suspicions and doubts raised now.

A void of course Moon occurs from 1:05 PM EDT, with the Moon's last aspect before changing signs (a sextile to Mercury), until the Moon enters Leo the next day, Saturday, April 25th, at 9:14 AM EDT.

APRIL 25
The Moon continues its transit of Cancer until 9:14 AM EDT, when it enters Leo. The Sun semi-squares Chiron this morning, and while we may be hungry to learn, grow, improve, and heal, we may be temporarily low on confidence and worried about making poor decisions. A First Quarter Moon occurs this evening when the Sun in Taurus forms a square with the Leo Moon.

The Moon is void until it enters Leo at 9:14 AM EDT.

Moon Signs This Week:

When the Moon is in Taurus

MoonTaurusWe are motivated by the desire for serenity, security, peace, and comfort. The Moon is at her most sensual and constant in Taurus. Our basic impulses are to relax, resist change, and "stop to smell the roses". Life slows down a little, and we get comfortable. We may also be inclined to stubbornness and materialism under this influence.

The Moon in Taurus generally favors the following activities: Substantial and material actions that yield solid results. Financial activities, and those involving personal possessions, applying for a loan, beginning a potentially long-term relationship, music, home decor.

When the Moon is in Gemini

MoonGeminiOur basic instinct is to communicate, think, and learn under the influence of Moon in Gemini. We are motivated by a desire for variety and by an instinctive curiosity. The Moon in Gemini is light-hearted, breezy, and curious, but it can also be restless and fickle.

The Moon in Gemini generally favors the following activities: Mental and communicative actions, and more than one activity at once. Reading, learning, letters and emails, errands, writing, teaching, making connections, short trips.

When the Moon is in Cancer

MoonCancerThe restlessness of the Gemini Moon gives way to an instinctive need for peace and quiet. A feeling of belonging and safety is what motivates us under this influence. The Moon feels right at home in the sign of Cancer, as it rules the sign. This Moon position has much healing potential. Although insular by nature, our feelings run deep, making it an ideal time to get in touch with what motivates us.

The Moon in Cancer generally favors the following activities: Domestic activities, those that involve awareness of personal needs. Home decor, family get-togethers.

When the Moon is in Leo

MoonLeoThe Moon in Leo speaks to our "inner child". It's a warm, generous, whole-heartedly loving position. Pride keeps us from pettiness, but it can also prevent us from opening up and revealing how we are truly feeling. We are on stage, our feelings are grand, and we appreciate some drama in our lives. We are easily threatened by anything that seems to be impersonal. This is a time when we seek attention--when we want to stand out for our special qualities. It's a strong time for romance and any creative activity as well.

The Moon in Leo generally favors the following activities: Creative activities, activities involving children, generous undertakings, undertakings in which personal recognition is desired, and risk-taking.

This Week's Planetary Positions By Sign (General Trends):

Sun in Aries A new sense of self, a more assertive personal style, a more dynamic approach to life: these are the hallmarks of the cycle that begins for you now. Doubts fade into the background, and reserve is more and more a thing of the past. It's time for action; your destiny is in your hands, rather than set apart. Full speed ahead ("and damn the torpedoes") is your motto now, for better or for worse!

Sun in Taurus The cycle now dawning in your life emphasizes stability, substance, practicality, and the concept of value - value in the material as well as psycho-spiritual sense. This marks a time of building to last, of appreciating the substantial rather than ephemeral. Consolidating past gains rather than focusing on radical new departures is likely to be a major theme for you during this cycle. Appreciating the finer things of life is another hallmark of this phase, which marks a time when you should be concentrating on "smelling the roses" rather than passing them by in such a hurry.

Mercury in Taurus "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" - that's the key to the way you think at a time like this. Practical, utilitarian ideas are the ones that make the most sense now - putting them to good use is a focus for you. Material things are foremost on your mind in many respects: an emphasis on the real rather than the ideal.

Venus in Gemini Saying (or writing) it with style comes natural now. A yen for variety is a hallmark of this phase, and this especially applies to romantic experience and artistic tastes. (The latter tends to focus on literature in general and poetry in particular.) A sociable, congenial, slightly frivolous orientation sets in.

Mars in Taurus Making the most of what you've got, striving for security and stability: that's the impulse that stirs in you as a new cycle begins in your life. New frontiers? That's kid's stuff for you now! What you want is to build something that will last: a pyramid, a Great Wall - you know, that sort of thing. Steady, patient, solid: that's your style now.

Jupiter in Leo High drama, big romance, a creative bonanza: this is the stuff dreams are made of now. The world is your stage, the spotlight is your goal, and the love and appreciation of others is the air you breathe. Children, lovers, admirers: these are the people who figure large in your life as this cycle progresses. A willingness to gamble on the future.

Saturn in Sagittarius The new phase now beginning in your life brings a need to break out of narrow concepts and legalistic philosophical or religious ideas. Remember: "A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of small minds." Opportunities to broaden your mental horizons may not come with ease, but they are essential if you are to avoid a kind of spiritual stagnation.

Uranus in Aries
A clean break with the past in some respects is signaled by the cycle you have just begun. What YOU need, YOUR freedom and independence, shattering old molds: these are the things that energize you and take priority in your life. Uniqueness and originality set you apart.

Neptune in Pisces Things spiritual and psychic take the driver's seat of your imagination as you begin a new cycle. The fine arts and all manner of fantasies assume a larger-than-life importance. Surrendering to fate, karma, and other powers greater than merely mortal may be seen as the ultimate liberation. If all is maya (illusion), what is the reality that gives rise to the world of appearances?

Pluto in Capricorn As this new phase dawns for you, the pursuit of social/political power and status has a way of seeming necessary and inevitable - and let nothing stand in its way. It starts out small, but has bigger consequences than you'd think. Ambition, responsibility, a place for everyone and everyone in their place...
